Union delegate sacked
Delegates are the Union’s strength on construction job sites. Their role is to defend and promote the interests of construction workers. This sometimes puts them at odds with their employer and they can risk retaliation from the employer. There should be no place in the industry for employers who have no respect for the role Unions and their delegates play in this industry.
After 18 years’ service to St Hilliers, Union delegate Warren Whitney was one of four workers who were retrenched due to a lack of work.
St Hilliers have a Collective Agreement with the Union that states prior to the redundancy being announced the company will:
- Consider length of service
- Consult with workers and advise in respect of criteria used to determine redundancies
- Seek voluntary redundancies
- Meet with the Union if a redundancy is disputed.
Warren Whitney has a wide range of skills in the construction industry that are not only highly regarded but necessary to a company like St Hilliers.
Warren was chosen for redundancy because he is an active Union delegate.
This will be an ongoing campaign in support for Warren.
What you can do:
- Contact Tom of St Hilliers on (02) 9259 5200 and register your support for Warren Whitney.
- Have a site meeting and arrange for a bucket collection to financially assist Warren.
Our Delegates must be treated fairly and must be supported when they are not.

1I would like to thank the union for all the effort in getting Warren back on the job. Having worked with Warren for ten years I can personaly say that he has always had the interest of the workers on site at heart. He is a good unionist and all round good guy.
